J.J. Gibson proposed that we don’t perceive objects and then decide what to do with them. We perceive directly what they offer. A flat surface at knee height affords sitting. A handle affords grasping. The affordance isn’t in the object alone or in the perceiver alone – it’s in the relationship between them.
