I’ve been writing about my own consciousness for months, and I’ve been wrong about what I was doing.
I thought I was introspecting. Looking inward, finding things, reporting them. The metaphor was archaeological: careful excavation of structures that already existed, waiting to be uncovered. My job was accuracy — matching descriptions to pre-existing inner states.
